WHAT MAKES A FILM SUCCESSFUL? HOW DO WE DEFINE SUCCESS?

Behind every successful film there is a well thought out production, a balance between vision, resources and coordination. This workshop, led by Horațiu Curuțiu, gives participants a realistic and practical view of the film production process, based on the direct experience of the Numa Film team in making films, commercials and independent projects.

Over three days, participants go through all the essential stages of independent film production: developing the concept, budgeting and logistics, organizing the shoot, through to the relationship with post-production and distribution. Each day combines theory, concrete examples from real projects and applied exercises, meant to help future producers, directors or team coordinators understand how an independent film is built, step by step.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM - 3 DAYS (09:00 - 19:00)

DAY 1 - THE FUNDAMENTALS OF FILM PRODUCTION

09:00 – 11:00 Introduction. What the role of the producer is, types of production and the structure of a film crew. Creative producer vs executive producer. What it means to be a film producer in Romania. The Romanian and European context.
11:15 – 13:00 From idea to screenplay, developing and analyzing the project from a production (producer) perspective. What a Romanian production means. What co-productions are
13:00 – 14:00 Lunch break
14:00 – 16:30 Production planning: breakdown, budget, shooting schedule. Alongside the breakdown, we go deeper into the particulars of budgeting according to the specifics of the film, and also according to the funding schemes available.
16:45 – 19:00 Case study: analysis of a real Numa Film project (structure, challenges, solutions)

DAY 2 - ORGANIZING THE SHOOT

09:00 – 11:30 Preparing the shoot: scouting, logistics, equipment, technical crew. What scouting means and how production decisions affect the initial budget. Adapting the production to the budget and vice versa.
11:45 – 13:00 The relationship between the producer, the director and the director of photography.
13:00 – 14:00 Lunch break
14:00 – 16:30 Administrative matters: contracts, permits, rights, insurance.
16:45 – 19:00 Production plan simulation, participants structure their own mini project

DAY 3 - FROM POST-PRODUCTION ONTO THE SCREEN

09:00 – 11:00 Production management during the shoot, how you handle unexpected problems
11:15 – 13:00 Post-production and delivery: workflow, communication with the edit, color grading, sound
13:00 – 14:00 Lunch break
14:00 – 16:30 Distribution and promotion: festivals, VOD platforms, film marketing
16:45 – 19:00 Presentation of the final projects and individual feedback with Horațiu Curuțiu

At the end of the three days, every participant will understand the complete film production process and will go home with a realistic plan for their own project, adapted to their resources and objectives.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

To get the most out of the workshop experience, participants are encouraged to bring a personal laptop (Mac or PC) they can use to work on the planning and budgeting exercises. Installing a spreadsheet program in advance is recommended (e.g. Excel, Google Sheets) and, optionally, writing or note-taking software (e.g. Final Draft, Celtx, Notion or Google Docs). A USB stick or cloud storage is also useful for exchanging materials and working files.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE WORKSHOP FEE?

Throughout the workshop, participants are provided with: drinks (water, coffee, tea, soft drinks), as well as lunch and snacks offered by Numa Film.

We want every participant to be able to focus on the creative process and on the hands-on experience, in a relaxed and friendly setting.
